Last year I attended SobCon09 – and met many of the people I’d previously only had conversations with on twitter. Successful Outstanding Bloggers Conference – required to advance your business to the next level. I hung out with some of the big name people – and that created avenues to stronger conversations over this past year.

Today – I want to talk about the people who took some time out of their busy schedule that weekend to welcome me, answer my questions and continue to stay in touch. They are the reason that I continue to grow in the social media realms.

@geekmommy Lucretia Pruitt was on a panel. I love her cutting wit and at SobCon she was suffering from a migraine. It did not slow her down, she’s the expert at just barreling through and doing what you have to do.

@jasonfalls Jason Falls – sat at my table. He’s another person with cutting wit. He can be sharp, to the point and does not suffer fools gladly. It was my good luck to see him having a skype conversation with his children. Yeah, he’s a real dad and it shows. I learned from Jason that all is not what it looks like. There are many layers to that onion.

@bradshorr Brad Shorr – one of the smartest guys in the world. We had some great conversations about SEO. Admittedly, I’m a little clueless on that topic. Brad spent some time showing me why I need to know more. He also followed up with phone calls after the event. Who does that? Brad Shorr does.

@Shashib Shashi Bellamkonda In real life, he’s a quiet guy. He’s also a great observer – and brings major good things to the small business conversation.

@GeoffLiving Now here’s a man with passion. In person, he’s busy and very focused on what he’s doing. You just want to follow him around to see what change he’s creating in the world. Hey – that’s what I do online with Geoff too!

@PhilGerb Phil Gerbyshak Yes – that man is as happy as his avatar. Always ready with a hug and a good word.

@BeckyMcCray Becky McCray is small business. She taught me how to use my camera to shoot video. She hung out in the hallway with me (and we all know the hallway is where you learn things at conferences). She broke bread with me. Becky is a friend, aren’t I lucky?

@CCSeed Richard Reeve Richard and @northernchick Kathryn Jennex – these two lovely people spent a lot of time with me — both are a compass point for calm in my life. Richard is a Jungian psychology student. Kathryn is possibly one of the kindest people in the world.

Online we live in a virtual world – we can create and shape our persona any way we want. I’m a pretty smart cookie – and wondered if I’d appear that way in real life too. I rather felt like Sally Field – You like me! You really like me! Turns out the persona I was shaping online just happened to be the real me. Meeting some of my online friends in real life gave me the opportunity to live into that person I said I was. It’s pretty cool to say you are who you are – and then to actually live into that space. It’s been so good for me, that I’ve declared this year as the year I live into my greatness. My virtual (and real) friends hold me to the standard I’ve set.

Now that rocks!

This blog post was written in response to a call out from Liz Strauss and Terry Starbucker – the real power behind SobCon. I plan on attending again this year – and always welcome an opportunity to write about the specials available. #SobCon2010 Read more about the promotion for SobCon10.

Now, how did I choose who would do my tattoo?

The most common way people choose their artist is by word of mouth. You’ve seen someone’s tattoo and really like it. That held true for me as well. My neice has a tattoo I really like so I asked her who did it.

Izzy at Lasting Impressions. I called and made an appointment for early June. My friend and I were both going. About a week prior, our schedules changed and we needed to reschedule. So I called again and talked to Katie.

The only day we could go was on a Tuesday. Katie does her job well. Izzy is off on Tuesdays. However, she informed me Jameela is one of the best tattoo artists she’s ever seen. Katie talked about her work, her love for the art and personally recommended Jameela’s work.

I’m a feminist at heart, and believe as women we need to support each other. I made the appointment with Jameela.

Jameela is indeed a talented artist. She also lived in Athens Greece for a number of years and was able to verify my words were correct, and she drew out the tattoo freehand and it was perfect. Jameela did Keri’s tattoo (see part of the process in the picture). It took longer than expected and she had to pick her brother up from the airport.

She gave me a choice: wait until tomorrow or have Taylor, her protege, do my tattoo. Wow! I’d waited and finally made up my mind, drove 50 miles and now my artist can’t do it! My reasonable brain understood her reason. My nervous brain was freaking out. I had seen Jameela’s work, but who is this Taylor ? What about my decision to support the women of the world? All that synchronicity was flying out the window.

I thought about what my tattoo was going to say. Peace. Be still. I took a moment and calmed down. I then went and looked at Taylor’s work (all good artists have a book with pictures of their work). I already had the design drawn up, he would be just doing the tattoo. I said yes, Taylor can do it.

It turned out just fine. Taylor was patient, took time to answer my one million questions and did the procedure as painlessly as possible. I do love my tattoo.

Now let’s look at the process and see where we can overlay it onto other areas of our lives.

How To Make A Good Decision

1. Look for examples of what you want, and then ask for referrals.

2. Be flexible, being rigid often requires going against the flow.

3. Don’t freak out. Take a minute or two to step away from the situation, get calm and then decide.

4. Be thankful.

Her bio states:In 1994, Lauren Freedman leveraged her 15 year retail and catalog career and passion for merchandising to found the e-tailing group, inc. The firm’s mission was, and continues to be, providing strategic and e-commerce solutions to online merchants as well as businesses targeting that market.
Here are just some of the notes I took from her presentation.

Now, how can I convert this information into usable ideas? Let’s talk a minute about that.
So I know that:

My promotions should be placed strategically

I need to offer the reader ondemand video and email subscriptions

I will be talking to surgical shoppers, information junkies, deal seekers, special item seekers and gift givers.

All of those items are also key to my Melaleuca business as well. Lauren has helped me target my customer, shown me what that customer is looking for, and began the planning process for the blog (and for my offline business as well).

Not bad for controversy. Better lesson is to listen to the speaker and hear the message – and don’t dwell on the delivery!

And here’s my action item: visit www.debthinksgreen.com and see where you might be using toxic products in your home (take the tour). Get the free ebook, and request more information. Want to just call me? 641-458-1114

Did you tell people you were available or did they just come to? It was a little of both. I connected w/someone at first sobcon and knew my background and became a client of mine.

Do you consider your business to be a blog business? Unless you’re generating gobs of money from your blog, then a blog is not a business. My blog was my credibility and I get business because of my blog. It’s a good calling card to give you credibility as a speaker, especially if you have an audience.

Denise, you’ve had multiple businesses where you partnered with others – how did you decide who to team up with?

It starts sometimes by accident. My first business was my first husband and we started a consulting business in the mid 90′s. It ended when the marriage ended. By that time I had plenty of skills, knowledge and passion about using the internet as a marketing tool. I teamed up with a client on the blogging stuff. I’m on my own again and I’m excited by that. I don’t work by myself – I have a virtual team behind me. I don’t want to be a technician, I’m more interested in the strategies. I partner with a support team – that is critical for me to grow and succeed. Another level is having joint venture partners.

What are joint venture partnerships? When 2 or more people decide they want to create something together (product, teleseminar series). It will be more powerful bringing in someone that compliments what I do. I found someone, Lou from loutube who knows video ( I really don’t). we joint ventured on a teleseminar class. We split the costs, developed it, and then prepared the product. It’s a one off experience. We now sell the product from both sides – and we are not tied together. So it’s project based – joint venture partnerships.

What are the advantages to doing that? Reach more people. More credibility. I’m now seen as an expert (in video). It helps me reach new markets.

Chris: when it comes to business, business is a team sport.

How does your blog currently fit into your business? Chris: my blog is my website. I am learning how to overall my blog to make it look more like a business. I use my blog to target specific keywords.

Paid search: you buy clicks – buy keyword. Organic search: Google is trolling the web and putting up those organic results. My blog is my credibility. It is also marketing because it pulls in search traffic, some of which converts into business.

What about rss feeds? Those people are following my content. My subscribers are looking for regular maintenance and update tips. My new clients have a problem – they need help with their wordpress fix.

Denise: post minimum of 2-3 times a week. It’s important to stay visible.

Chris: I’m not as fixated on the money. I’m a lousy salesperson because I’m not money motivated. My wife is the money person – she’s about the bottom line.

The passion is the driver. You gotta do what you are passionate about. It will take you pretty far in your business.

What is the difference between the persona of one person blogging and more than one blogging? Denise has has blogs that are just her voice. Occasionally her partner blogs – but they just keep their own voices so people know they are blogging. Copyblogger is a good example of a blog with multiple authors – blog posts related to copywriting.

How do you go about expanding your image on the web?

Denise: methodically and strategically. I use all the SM tools available. I’m consistent about it – I blog consistently, I’m active on twitter and facebook. I also sign up and create a profile for all SM sites out there – I don’t always use them, but I make my profile available. I also make sure I feed my blogs into that bio. I don’t know where someone is going to find me. I make sure there are links to my bio, blog and twitter stream. Associate yourself with big thinkers – I’m active on facebook every day. Linked in has a powerful section called answers where you can extend your credibility and thought leadership in your niche. Also you can ask questions and get some great research. I’m pretty strategic about my visibility. I use my blog as my home base. I want to bring people home to my blog – that’s where I control my message and content. Biztipsblog.com buildabetterblog.com @denisewakefield @chriscree

subscriptions: rss or email?

Both! Be sure to provide both! 12-13% of blog readers subscribe by RSS. That’s it.

What about links inside your blog?

Chris: They are the currency of the internet! I’m all for it! They don’t cost you anything. Make them relevant and interesting and apply to write you are writing about. Google sees them as a currency. It’s also good for my audience – they can get to the source material. I’m a firm believer in planting and harvesting. So if you plant outbound links, you’ll receive lots of inbound links.

This particular vineyard has been a little tricky for them. They’ve been working it for 7 years now. Normally, the vines should be growing well and producing. They’ve had a few of the vines that are doing better here. Yet, they still had to come in and plant new ones.

It’s located at the top of a hill, next to the first cemetery in the county (no longer used) – in a very windy location. They wondered if the wind was causing the problem. However, there was no sign of wind destruction.

We have an excess of deer in our area. The conditions have made it so that during hunting season the hunters are not able to kill as many deer as allowed. Flooding, warm weather, and smart deer all contribute. Now maybe you are shuddering about killing deer. Stop that! Out here, the hunters are not killing for sport. Most of them are feeding families with that deer meat. The ones that hunt for sport are not allowed on my property.

Deer like to have different areas to play in. They need trees for cover from danger. They need running water for drinking. They need open areas to romp in. They need fields to find sustenance in. They tend to run in herds and use the same areas year after year. On my farm, we have trees, open fields, a creek, and lots of hills.

One day I was working in the cemetery, righting headstones, weed whacking and just enjoying the view. I was lying on my back, playing the cloud game. I heard this loud noise and sat up and looked over. There were about 10 deer in the vineyard! They had crossed the road, come up the fenceline, went through the trees and jumped over the fence. Eating grapes.

I called Vern and he immediately came and put up a higher fence. Problem of the grapes solved! It was too late last year to replant, so they are doing it now.

Friday it all begins. I’ve been reviewing the schedules and thinking about the things I want to learn – and use in my business. I also have four sponsors and will be considering their businesses as well.

I am a marketing executive for Melaleuca. My position with them entails introducing people to the company, helping them find products that will work to enhance their lives and create greener homes. I don’t sell products! I do talk about them. I also help others to do the same. I will NOT be blogging about products (the company has all that information). I will be blogging about network marketing!

The Franklin County Historical Society preserves our local heritage and shares it with others. I am helping them bring their information to the internet. We are looking at two blogs about historical sites.

Townsend Winery opens this summer. They have spent the last 8 years or so preparing their business (built, worked the land, paid for everything as they went). I will be helping them set up and maintain their blog.

Cornerstone Cottage, owned by Judy Wrolson, is a great local gift, craft, fun things store. Judy is ahead of the curve in this conversation. She is using twitter and facebook. I’ll excitedly be helping her create a blog to rock the crafting world!

Pat Palmer is The Computer Guy. He does onsite repairs and offsite ones as well. Pat is one smart cookie – and he’ll be using his blog to generate more business.

In a nutshell, I am working with clients who have new blogs. Nothing like starting fresh!

Here’s the topics that are covered on the first day of SOBCon:

trust in building community and participation in a 21st century business

Power positioning: from personal branding to online assets

what to do, know and expect from a blog based business

explore the changes that come with ramping up from business person to CEO

ins and outs of writing for your readers and search engines

expand the conversation into audio and video

tools and strategies for keeping the back office on track

tailoring your web content for the accessibility market

How exciting! It gets better. All the presenters will present – and then have conversations with their listeners. The presenters are not your ‘business school you’d better listen to me’ kind of presenters either. They are the successful bloggers, inspiring speakers and just plain fun people!

See you there?
